Your website needs to talk to AI agents — here's why

Picture this: a potential customer asks their phone, "Find me a plumber in Greenville who's open Saturday morning and takes Apple Pay." Their AI agent scans Google Business Profiles, reads structured data from websites, and shortlists three businesses. If your site doesn't speak the language AI agents read — schema.org JSON-LD — you're not on that list.

This isn't science fiction. Google's AI agents can already look up business profiles, fill contact forms, and complete transactions on behalf of users. The shift from "people browsing websites" to "agents transacting on websites" is happening now.

What AI agents actually read

When an AI agent lands on your website, it doesn't admire your hero image or read your About page. It looks for machine-readable structured data — JSON-LD blocks in your <head> that describe what your business does, when it's open, what you sell, and how to pay.

Without this data, your site is effectively invisible to AI commerce. You have a storefront with no sign.

The schemas that matter:

  • LocalBusiness / Organization — who you are, where you are, how to reach you
  • WebSite + SearchAction — that your site is searchable
  • Service — what you do, with provider references
  • Product + Offer — what you sell, at what price, with what availability
  • FAQPage — answers to common questions, surfaced directly in search
  • openingHoursSpecification — when can the agent act?

The small business gap

Most small business websites have little to no structured data. Industry research consistently shows that the majority of local business sites are missing the markup that AI agents need to understand and recommend them. These businesses are paying for websites that can't be read by the technology that's about to drive most local commerce.

The gap between "having a website" and "having an AI-agent-readable website" is the defining competitive advantage for small businesses over the next 2–3 years.

What we built

Every site Upstate Web Co ships includes:

  • Complete LocalBusiness JSON-LD with address, geo-coordinates, opening hours, payment methods, price range, and currencies
  • WebSite + SearchAction schema for sitelinks
  • Conditional schemas based on what the business actually does (Service, Product, FAQPage, etc.)
  • A direct bridge from the client's Google Business Profile URL into the schema's sameAs array — cross-linking the two surfaces AI agents discover businesses through

And it's not manual. When a client fills in their business details through our portal, that data flows directly into their site's structured data through our headless build pipeline. Address, hours, payment methods, social links — one source of truth, automatically wired into every page.

The ROI

Structured data costs nothing to add (it's markup, not infrastructure). The return is discoverability on the platform that's about to mediate most local commerce. A business that's invisible to AI agents in 2027 is like a business without a Google listing in 2017.

If you're a small business owner: ask your web developer what structured data your site has. If the answer is "what's structured data?", you have a gap.

If you're a web developer: add JSON-LD to every site you build. It takes an afternoon to learn and becomes table stakes within 18 months.

Upstate Web Co builds AI-agent-optimized websites for small businesses. Every site ships with complete structured data, Google Business Profile integration, and a headless pipeline that keeps it current.
